As history has it, the first bridal shower is believed to have taken place in Holland. A father rejected his daughter’s choice of a poor miller as her husband. When the father did not approve the marriage, her friends “showered” her with gifts in order that she receive her traditional dowry she needed to set up house.

Showers are parties given in honor of the bride and sometimes given for her and the groom. They are usually held in the afternoon or early evening. Anything can be served from light refreshments to a full meal. Decorations may be used to set a theme.

Generally only close friends and relatives are invited with presents and gifts being given. Gifts are centered on a couple’s special interests, such as sports, cooking, wine or fine food. Anyone can give a shower.
